About this Project

Use of Augmented Reality to Optimize the Effectiveness of Biomedical Education

Welcome!

Augmented reality (AR) is a live view of a physical environment in which elements are enhanced by computer-generated sensory inputs. In education, AR is used to enhance lecture notes, 3D models, or other objects with multimedia to facilitate interactions, manipulations, and active participations by students, as well as to provide supplementary information that improve acquisition of knowledge with an integrative approach. As a novel technology, AR has been paradigmatically shifting the mode of E-learning toward virtual experiences embedded in real-world contexts.

The aim of this project is to maximize the positive impacts of AR applications in medical education. Based on feedback from students and teachers, we identify the key elements in strategies for optimized use of AR in the learning and teaching of biomedical sciences, both during lectures/ tutorials and through self-exploration where individualized experience is achieved with participatory learning in a student-centred manner.

In addition, we develop AR educational software (mobile Apps) with tailor-made materials that are more adoptable into curricula at the university level than the existing AR software. It is anticipated that our new AR educational software with extended functions will provide the basis for the establishment of a comprehensive set of AR-based E-learning materials which form a valuable component of curricula for medical education to benefit students from more disciplines in the future.

We hope that this website can act as a resource platform to promote the effectiveness of AR on improving the quality of biomedical science education, leading to productive, fulfilling, rewarding, and enjoyable learning.

This project is supported by HKU Teaching Development Grant (# 17/662). We would like to take this opportunity to thank all students who participate in this project!
