Summary:
Progenitor/stem cells and derivatives from pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) hold a great promise for a new era of cell-based therapy in salvaging the failing heart, however, how the PSCs differentiate into cardiac lineage cells has not yet been fully understood and the optimal cell type for regeneration of the failing heart is still under the investigation. In the past, we investigated the role of Ca2+ signals and small molecular compounds in the regulation of cardiogenesis and developed a chemically defined system for the robust induction of cardiovascular progenitor cells (CVPCs) from pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). Currently, we are testing the therapeutic effects of hPSC-derived cardiac lineage cells in the myocardial infarct model of adult mouse and elucidating potential mechanisms for cardiac repair.
