Seminar - Modelling variability in transcriptomic data – moving beyond the average (Speaker: Dr. Jessica Mar)

Dr. Jessica Mar
Associate Professor, Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology
University of Queensland, Australia

Date: Monday, 11-November-2019
Time: 11:00 a.m.
Venue: Seminar Room 5, LG1/F, Laboratory Block, Faculty of Medicine Building
21 Sassoon Road, Pokfulam, Hong Kong

Summary:
When studying the transcriptome to understand its contribution to the regulation of cellular phenotypes, our inferences typically focus on average gene expression. Studies have demonstrated how modeling heterogeneity of gene expression has revealed more information than following average trends alone. This talk outlines some of the approaches Dr. Mar’s group has developed to investigate how the variability of gene expression contributes to our understanding of transcriptional regulation using examples from human stem cell populations and cancer genomics.
