Hong Kong’s Biotech Ecosystem Gains Momentum: HKUMed and Skyhore Collaborate to Drive Innovation and Cultivate Future Leaders in Microbiome Science
The School of Biomedical Sciences, the LKS Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong (HKUMed), and Skyhore Biotech Limited, a Hong Kong startup pioneering microbiome-based health solutions, today announced a strategic partnership to support student internships and industry-driven research.
HONG KONG, 8 October 2026 — As Hong Kong accelerates its ambitions to become a global biotech hub, a new partnership between HKUMed School of Biomedical Sciences (SBMS) and Skyhore Biotech marks a significant step toward translating cutting-edge microbiome research into practical health solutions. This collaboration will provide students with hands-on industry experience, supporting the development of innovative, science-driven health platforms that could redefine daily wellness.
Skyhore Biotech Limited, a startup at the forefront of microbiome science, will host HKUMed SBMS students in research and development roles, helping to bridge academic discovery with real-world applications. This initiative aims to cultivate a new generation of biotech talent capable of driving Hong Kong’s industry forward and contributing to global health advancements.
Key Areas of Cooperation
Internship programme: Structured internship opportunities for HKUMed SBMS undergraduate and postgraduate students at Skyhore Biotech Limited. Students market research, product optimisation, and business development activities, gaining practical skills in a fast-growing biotech sector.
Educational activities: Guest seminars delivered by Skyhore Biotech Limited for HKUMed SBMS students, introducing practical insights from diagnostic product development and clinical translation into the School's learning environment.
A Distinguished Occasion
The MoU signing ceremony was held at the HKUMed campus, attended by senior representatives from both organisations alongside HKUMed SBMS students. Representing HKUMed was Professor Joshua Ho Wing-kei, Assistant Dean (Innovation & Technology Transfer), HKUMed, and Co-Director of the Master of Biomedical Innovation (MBioInno) Programme, School of Biomedical Sciences. Representing Skyhore Biotech Limited was Mr Wang Guixin, Executive Director.
Mr Wang Guixin, Executive Director, said, ‘Fostering a vibrant biotech ecosystem is key to Hong Kong’s innovation future. Founded in 2015, the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBMS) builds on a more than a century-long legacy in advancing modern medicine at the oldest academic institution in Hong Kong – the LKS Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong (HKUMed). As the largest pre-clinical School at HKUMed, we draw on the Faculty’s heritage to advance fundamental understanding of life and translate discoveries to improve human health.
