The 5th HKU Biomedical Sciences Summer Academy wrapped up recently, marking another successful milestone for the programme. Conducted from 3-7 August, 2026, the week-long event brought together a passionate cohort of secondary school students to immerse themselves in the fast-paced world of biomedical research at HKUMed.

An Immersive Exploration
Designed to ignite a passion for science, the academy provided attendees with rare, behind-the-scenes access to university facilities. Students stepped out of traditional classrooms and directly into professional environments, engaging with faculty members, student ambassadors, and peers through dynamic teamwork and collaborative group presentations.

Highlights from the Lab
Participant feedback underscored the unique value of the academy's hands-on curriculum. Standout activities included the Anatomy Dissection Laboratory Tour, where students observed human specimens, and immersive virtual reality (VR) human anatomy sessions. Practical experiments—such as observing planarian regeneration, exploring protein crystallography, and using immobilised lactase for lactose reduction—allowed participants to translate theoretical concepts into tangible scientific discoveries.

Looking Forward
As it marks its fifth milestone year, the HKU Biomedical Sciences Summer Academy continues to serve as an inspiring bridge between secondary education and future scientific careers. By fostering early curiosity and offering practical laboratory exposure, the programme empowers the next generation of researchers to envision their potential in the biomedical sciences.

We thank the Croucher Foundation for its continued support of the Academy, and our instructors and student helpers for contributing their time and expertise.
