Biography

Prof. Guojun Sheng is currently a professor at Kumamoto University, Japan. He obtained his Ph.D. in developmental genetics from the Rockefeller University in 1997 under the supervision of Claude Desplan and received his postdoctoral training in molecular embryology in the laboratory of Claudio Stern at Columbia University and University College London. Before joining the International Research Center for Medical Sciences (Kumamoto University) in late 2015, Prof. Sheng had directed the Laboratory for Early Embryogenesis at RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology i(Kobe, Japan) as a team leader and senior investigator (2004-2015). His laboratory uses the avian model and his research focuses on epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) regulation during gastrulation, mesoderm differentiation into the blood and endothelial lineages, and chorioallantoic membrane (an evolutionary predecessor of mammalian placenta) maturation. Prof. Sheng is also interested in understanding the link between developmental and cancer EMTs and in internationalization of biomedical research environment in Asia.
