Summary:
Germline genetic variants regulating expression and activity of APOBEC3 enzymes and IFN-λ4, a novel type-III interferon, significantly affect immune response to viral infections, and are associated with cancer risk and clinical outcomes. Population-specific distribution of these variants provides evidence of past or ongoing selection, which is suggestive of their importance in different infectious environments. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of these associations is important for improving viral clearance and developing novel cancer prevention and treatment strategies.
