Our school has launched the ‘HKU Biomed Entrepreneurship Talk Series’ which aims to stimulate academic’s interest in translating their basic innovations to applications through inviting academics/entrepreneurs to share their experience with startups.

Biography:
Professor Barbara Chan
Prof. Barbara Chan is currently a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Biomedical Engineering programme, and an Associate Dean in the Graduate School, of the University of Hong Kong.
She obtained her Bachelor degree in Biochemistry and PhD degree in Surgical Science (Orthopaedics & Traumatology) from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She had her Postdoctoral training in Laser Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Prof. Chan has established the Tissue Engineering Laboratory with the vision to develop personalized therapies for patients with tissue injuries through bioengineering biomaterials- and stem cell-based tissues.
She is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Scientist at the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. She is also a registered authorized person in advanced therapeutic products in Hong Kong.
Prof. Chan has published 83 journal articles and 210 conference papers, and is holding 18 patents.
Abstract:
Together with her business partner and postdocs, Prof. Chan has founded a technology startup company to develop cartilage regeneration therapies. In this talk, she will share with the audience her passion in developing platform technologies, the importance of working with a multidisciplinary team, her experience in setting up a startup company, and the challenges she has been facing in translating tissue engineering research.
