Title: Organs-on-Chips and Future Medicine

Biography

Dr. Jianhua Qin is a Chair Professor at Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Director of Biomicrofluidic Research Centre. Dr. Qin is the Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and Associate Editor of Lab on a Chip. Dr. Qin received her Ph.D from Chinese Academy of Sciences. She worked as Postdoc in the University of Toronto and Visiting Scholar in the University of Hong Kong. Her research interest includes the development of human organ chips, biomaterials and engineered organoids systems for tissue development, disease studies and drug testing applications.

Abstract

Organs-on-chips are engineered microfluidic cell culture devices which offer the possibility to resemble the complex structures and physiological functions of major functional units of human organs. It is well-suited for the study of tissue development, disease etiology, and drug testing by replicating the high-level tissue and organ-level physiology. In this talk, I will present our efforts to build  multi-scale tissue/organ-on-chip systems that allow to create in vitro experimental models for disease modeling, drug testing, disease modeling and SARS-CoV-2 infection. The design processes with attention of the particular device, cells and biomaterials used are presented. The recent attempts to engineer stem cell organoids-on-chip system (islet, liver organoids etc) by combining microfluidic system with organoids are introduced as well.
