Title: "Engineer Biology for New Materials”

Biography

Dr. Fei Sun is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Before joining HKUST in 2014, Dr. Fei Sun worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Chemical Engineering, California Institute of Technology. He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Chicago in 2012 and B.Sc. degree at Peking University in 2007.

Abstract

In recent years, there has been a growing trend of designing smart materials with dynamically tunable properties, which calls for a new level of control over macromolecular systems. Although natural evolution has led to the creation of protein molecules with extraordinary structural and functional diversity, such an ecological diversity has yet to be tapped for materials science and engineering. Taking advantage of some emerging synthetic biology tools and principles, we focus on the strategies for directly assembling engineered protein molecules into smart materials, which provides solutions for real-world challenges ranging from regenerative medicine to environmental remediation.
