Talk Title: Computational stem cell biology and organoids

Biography
Speaker

Pengyi Yang is a NHMRC Investigator and an Associate Professor at The University of Sydney. He heads the Laboratory of Computational Systems Biology at the Children’s Medical Research Institute. He worked as a Research Fellow in Systems Biology at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA, and subsequently joined the School of Mathematics and Statistics, The University of Sydney, as a faculty member to establish his research program, specialising in developing machine learning and statistical models for characterising molecular networks underlying cell identity and predicting stem cell-fate decisions.

Abstract
The development of multi-omics technologies and their recent advances towards single-cell resolution has transformed stem cell research. Yet, large-scale bulk and single-cell multi-omics data generated by such technologies create a significant challenge in their analysis. To this end, computational methods are essential for uncovering biological knowledge from these complex data. In this presentation, I will introduce our research on stem cells and stem-cell derived retinal organoids and the computational methods we have developed for characterising cell identity and uncovering knowledge in stem cell research.
