Biography
.
Professor Iain Johnstone is a Professor at the University of Glasgow in the College of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Life Sciences. He has been Head of Learning and Teaching and Deputy Head of School within the School of Life Sciences (2015-2022) and now as the Associate Dean for the Life Sciences (2022-present). His research interests include tissue specific control of the cell cycle in C. elegans, and collagen biogenesis and the recognition and processing of mutant collagens in C. elegans.

Abstract
During the earlier research-focused parts of my career I was able to develop my teaching practise around components of my own research, and sometimes the research of colleagues, to create teaching content focused on the logical interpretation of research data and how new knowledge and understanding is generated.

My research was primarily with the free-living nematode and model organism Caenorhabditis elegans and most of my upper curriculum teaching was to our Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology degree programmes.

I will focus on some research with a set of genes in C. elegans involved in forming its collagenous exoskeleton where double-mutant states demonstrate very different forms of genetic interaction, which in turn are both predictive of and explained by different interactions and functions of encoded proteins.  This is used in a mini-project form of lab to our Year 3 Genetics students.  If time permits, I may also briefly discuss some cell-cycle research that was used to develop a problem session to our Molecular and Cellular Biology degree, also Year 3.
