Biography
.

Dr. Laura Zahn is an evolutionary geneticist by training. She received a BA in Biology from Smith College in Massachusetts, and then worked on the nascent Human Genome Project at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School between college and graduate school. She received her Ph.D in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, with a minor in Genetics from the University of Arizona and completed her post-doctoral work for the Floral Genome Project at Pennsylvania State University. Her Ph.D and post-doctoral research were interdisciplinary studies on the genetics and genomics, evolution and development of plant mating systems. In 2006 Dr. Zahn joined the staff of Science magazine where she worked as the lead editor focusing on papers in the fields of Evolution and Genetics and Genomics. In 2022 she moved to Cell Press as the Editor-in-Chief of the new journal Cell Genomics.

Abstract

This talk will present information from a journal editor’s perspective on high impact Scientific Publishing from her experience at Science and Cell Press. The talk aims to provide practical information for preparing a paper for submission, identifying journal(s) for submission, writing a cover letter and showing what happens editorially after a paper is submitted to a journal.  The talk will also discuss what is expected for reviews and how to write a review as well as other relevant information around interactions with an editor.
