Seminar - Cardiac applications of hPSCs: from single cell analysis of cardiac differentiation to screening venom-derived toxins for cardiovascular therapeuticse (Speaker: Dr. Nathan Palpant)

Dr. Nathan Palpant
Group Leader, Genomics of Development and Disease Division
Institute for Molecular Bioscience, The University of Queensland, Australia

Date: Tuesday, 6-November-2018
Time: 5:00 p.m.
Venue: Rm. A2-08, 2/F, Mrs. Chen Yang Foo Oi Telemedicine Centre
William MW Mong Block, Faculty of Medicine Building
21 Sassoon Road, Pokfulam, Hong Kong

Summary:
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide and new therapeutics are required to address growing public health demands. Dr. Palpant’s work aims to expand treatment options for cardiovascular diseases through interdisciplinary research, drawing knowledge gained about developmental biology to inform new therapeutic approaches. In this seminar, Dr. Palpant will present three vignettes from fundamental discovery to translational applications based on their current work studying cardiac stem cell differentiation at single cell resolution, utilizing epigenetic signatures to identify genes governing cell identity, and using venom toxins to discover novel cardioprotective peptides for the ischemic heart.
