Summary:
γ/δ T-cells form a unique niche at the interface of innate and adaptive immunity. They act as early cellular stress sensors and can innately kill transformed and infected cells, as well as free bacteria. Remarkably, after their cytotoxic activity, accompanied by inflammatory cytokine production, they are able to change phenotype and function into efficient professional phagocytosing and MHC peptide presenting cells. This behaviour, in combination with the ease by which they can be expanded in large numbers ex vivo, offers exciting opportunities in the fields of cancer immunotherapy as well as in the development of novel antimicrobial strategies.
