Summary:
Large collections of spinal MRIs of chronic backpain patients and asymptomatic subjects by research groups offer the promise of biomarker discovery for research and, ultimately, improved patient stratification and management. A prerequisite for this is the extraction of robust and discriminative radiological measurements from spinal MRI, however, the lack of imaging biomarker standardisation within the research community and the inherent intra- and inter-reader variability has hampered research to date.

Over the past 5 years, we have been developing an automated system, SpineNet, for the automated extraction of radiological measurements from spinal MRI. The system can robustly extract measurements for disc degeneration, e.g. Pfirrmann, vertebral changes, e.g. Modic, spinal stenosis and other phenotypes from the literature and has been validated on the Genodisc and TwinsUK datasets.

I will present an overview of the system, some its results, discuss its potential in research and finally dream about future clinical applications.
