Summary:
The complex multi-layer nuclear envelope in animal cells separates the nuclear interior from the cytoplasm, but it is much more than a simple barrier. Highly regulated bidirectional communication occurs through the nuclear pore complexes, and the protein meshwork, or lamina, that underlies the membranes of the envelope is increasingly recognised as an important integration hub for cellular signalling. Professor Vaux will illustrate these emerging themes with examples drawn from the normal cellular aging process, pathological premature aging syndromes, cancer biology and the normal cyclical processes in human reproductive tissue.
