Summary:
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a fast-growing area of Neuroscience. Since its introduction to treat motor disability in patients with Parkinson’s disease, more than 150,000 patients worldwide have been implanted with stimulating electrodes. While initial electrophysiological experiments showed local inhibition of neurons exposed to high frequency electrical stimulation, multi-modal studies revealed a variety of mechanisms including excitation of passing fibers, desynchronisation of groups of neurons, and neurotransmitter switching. In this seminar, the speaker will highlight the current understanding of the mechanisms of DBS.
