Abstract
Intellectual property is increasingly the currency of competitive advantage in today's innovation-driven economy. This seminar provides a comprehensive overview of the intellectual property landscape — trademarks, designs, copyright and patents — with a particular focus on patents as a strategic business asset. It highlights the importance and value of patents, including their role in attracting angel investment, blocking competitors and enhancing company value. The session covers the nature and purpose of patents, the pathways to securing protection for an invention, and the principles of effective filing strategy. It guides students through the patent application and grant process, the patentability requirements, patent enforcement and infringement, and the art of working effectively with patent attorneys, while highlighting the common pitfalls that can undermine even the most promising inventions.
