HKUMed School of Biomedical Sciences and Phase Scientific join forces to nurture Hong Kong's next-generation biomedical talent through academic-industry collaboration
The School of Biomedical Sciences, the LKS Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) partners with Hong Kong-based Phase Scientific International Limited to offer biomedical students practical exposure across the diagnostics development pipeline.
HONG KONG, 17 September 2026 — In a move set to strengthen Hong Kong's biomedical talent pipeline, the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBMS) at the LKS Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong (HKUMed), and Phase Scientific International Limited (PHASE Scientific) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster closer ties between academia and industry.
The partnership links Hong Kong’s biomedical talent development with cutting-edge diagnostics industry expertise, offering students hands-on experience and positioning them within the diagnostics and biotech sectors in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. As a pioneering biotechnology company revolutionizing early disease detection through proprietary urine-based diagnostic, PHASE Scientific will collaborate with HKUMed SBMS faculty and students to integrate real-world diagnostic development and industry practices into academic research and training.
Key Areas of Cooperation
Educational activities: Guest seminars delivered by PHASE Scientific professionals for HKUMed SBMS students, introducing practical insights from diagnostic product development and clinical translation into the School's learning environment.
Internship programme: Structured internship opportunities for HKUMed SBMS undergraduate and postgraduate students at PHASE Scientific, offering direct exposure to product development, diagnostic workflows, and industry research.
A Distinguished Occasion
The MoU signing ceremony was held at the HKUMed campus, attended by representatives from both organisations. Representing HKUMed were Professor Joshua Ho Wing-kei, Assistant Dean (Innovation & Technology Transfer), HKUMed and Co-Director of the Master of BiomedicalInnovation (MBioInno) Programme, School of Biomedical Sciences; Dr Eden Ti and Dr Danqing Yin, Assistant Lecturers and Course Coordinators of the MBioInno Programme from the same School. Representing PHASE Scientific was Dr Ricky Chiu, Chairman and CEO.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Ricky Chiu, said, ‘Hong Kong offers a unique combination of rigorous regulatory standards, deep scientific talent, and connectivity to global markets. This partnership reflects that same ambition. By connecting HKUMed SBMS students directly to real-world diagnostic development, we are cultivating professionals who understand both the scientific rigour and the commercial pathways needed to bring diagnostics innovation to patients worldwide.’
Professor Joshua Ho commented, ‘Translating biomedical discoveries into practical applications requires close collaboration between academia and industry. Through this partnership, our students gain direct exposure to the full cycle of diagnostic development—from research concept to clinical deployment. This equips them to contribute meaningfully to Hong Kong's diagnostics sector.’
About the School of Biomedical Sciences, HKUMed
Founded in 2015, the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBMS) builds on a more than a century-long legacy in advancing modern medicine at the oldest academic institution in Hong Kong – the LKS Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong (HKUMed). As the largest pre-clinical School at HKUMed, we draw on the Faculty’s heritage to advance fundamental understanding of life and translate discoveries to improve human health. HKUMed SBMS hosts Hong Kong’s first Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences programme, which provides four academic majors: biomedical research, bioinformatics, clinical sciences, and health technology. In 2026, HKUMed SBMS launched Hong Kong’s only Master of Biomedical Innovation (MBioInno) programme, which aims to train a pool of local talents who can turn pioneering biotechnology and AI digital health technology into innovative new health products and services through technology transfers and entrepreneurship.
