Press Release: HKUMed and Institut Pasteur collaborate to use an evolution in a test tube approach to develop new molecules for malaria diagnosis

The LKS Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) has collaborated with Institut Pasteur, Paris, to develop an approach to evolve molecules which are entirely alien to biology. The researchers have demonstrated the approach by evolving molecules which stick to a malaria biomarker. Critically, these special non-biological molecules are able to carry out tasks which normal biological molecules are intrinsically unable to do. These molecules can, for example, be used to determine the type of malaria with which a patient is infected.

Press Release: HKUMed researchers mine immunogenic information from SARS-CoV-2 for rational design of vaccine against SARS-CoV-2

Researchers at the School of Biomedical Sciences, the Department of Microbiology and the Department of Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) collaborated with researchers at the Institute of Synthetic Biology of Chinese Academy of Sciences - Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology and the College of Life Science and Technology of Beijing University of Chemical Technology to conduct a study for mining immunogenic information from 39 COVID-19 patients in Hong Kong. The study analysed and tested immunogenic information of SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein, and then discussed the feasibility of rational design of vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 by using the information.

Press Release: HKUMed uncovers novel DNA repair network as promising cancer drug targets

While a myriad of DNA repair networks, many of which represent cancer biomarkers and drug targets, are in place to counteract as many as 70,000 DNA damaging events per cell per day, the most important one that specialises to protect the gene-coding fraction has remained elusive. The gene-coding fraction makes up roughly 5% of our DNA, but because it encodes for the workhorses of each cell it is especially vital for cell function. Accordingly, researchers at the LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) have uncovered a hitherto unidentified DNA repair network, revealing new possibilities in cancer treatment and management.

港大遺體捐贈日「感悟人生」已於六月二十七日順利舉行。我們跟聖公會聖匠堂社區中心和食物及環境衛生署合作安排了不同活動及講座,介紹及分享生死教育的資訊。是次活動約有200人參與,感謝各界支持,期望來年跟大家再次見面。 Our Body Donation Day with the theme of “A Taste of Life – how death teaches us to live” has successfully completed on 27 Jun, 9:30 am to 6 pm. We cooperated with SKH Holy Carpenter Church Community Center and Food and Environmental Hygiene Department to arrange 5 booths introducing and sharing life and death psychoeducation information with participants. We have served around 200 visitors during the event. Thank you for your participation. See you next year.

Press Release: HKUMed scientists unlock the molecular mechanism that promotes ovarian cancer growth, paving the way for new treatment opportunities

Ovarian cancer is the 6th most common cancer among women in Hong Kong. The latest figures show that 651 cases of ovarian cancer were diagnosed in 2017, with 219 deaths in the same year. The causes and the molecular events that lead to the development of the disease remain largely unknown. Now a study by researchers at the LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) has revealed a signalling pathway triggered by a protein called p85β to promote the growth and progression of ovarian cancer cells.

A research team from the LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) has discovered an unprecedented molecular mechanism to govern the formation of sensory neurons versus satellite glial cells in the dorsal root ganglia. The discovery provided insight into the pathological changes in pain development that paves the way for new therapeutic opportunities.
