Press Release: HKUMed researchers discover a novel mechanism of multicellular pattern formation providing new insights into development

Living organisms exhibit amazing patterns or structures during development, such as stratified cell layers during early embryogenesis, animal skin patterns composed of different pigment cells, etc. Understanding how these patterns or structures are formed remains a fundamental scientific question. Researchers at the School of Biomedical Sciences, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) collaborated with researchers at Université Paris Diderot, France and the Institute of Synthetic Biology of Chinese Academy of Sciences - Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, to conduct a study of pattern formation in artificial multicellular systems. Combining experimental biology and theoretical physics, the study identified the reciprocal control of motility to be a general mechanism for biological pattern formation and self-organization of different cell types, providing new insights into development. The findings are now published in Nature Physics.

Press Release: HKUMed researchers create a screening platform to discover new combination therapies for ovarian cancer and Parkinson’s disease

The LKS Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed), in collaboration with School of Life Sciences of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Faculty of Health Sciences of University of Macau, and the Ming Wai Lau Centre for Reparative Medicine of Karolinska Institute (Hong Kong node), have developed a new platform to systemically study the knockout effects of all possible two-way or three-way combinations in a given set of genes, with simple steps. By applying the platform to the druggable genes, which have existing drugs to inhibit their proteins, the team has successfully identified effective double or triple regimen combinations suppressing ovarian cancer cell growth and against Parkinson’s disease toxicity. Their work is now published in Cell Reports and a patent application has been filed based on this work.

Press Release: HKUMed reveals the pathogenic gene of carpal tunnel syndrome, providing new directions for prevention and treatment

The LKS Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed), in collaboration with China-Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University, Mainland China, Harvard University and National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S., have discovered that genetic mutation is one of the key risk factors of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The study revealed a previously unrecognised mechanism in CTS pathogenesis and provided new insight into the development of new preventive and therapeutic strategies. The findings are now published in the leading multidisciplinary science journal Nature Communications.
